Das Labyrinthmotiv erstreckt sich nahezu über seine ganzen Werke und hat ihn seit frühster Kindheit fasziniert und seitdem nie losgelassen. In Interviews oder öffentlichen Reden nutzte Dürrenmatt das Labyrinth als Metapher oder auch Gleichnis, um seine Gedanken zu formulieren – somit bildet es auch die Grundlage, Dürrenmatt zu verstehen und zu deuten. Daher ist es nahezu eine Unmöglichkeit dem Labyrinthischen zu entgehen, wenn man sich mit Friedrich Dürrenmatt beschäftigt. U.a. veröffentlicht Franz Kreuzer sein Interview mit Dürrenmatt unter dem Titel „Die Welt als Labyrinth. Die Unsicherheit unserer Wirklichkeit“ und Peter Rüedi widmet in seinem biographischen Werk „Dürrenmatt oder Die Ahnung vom Ganzen“ dem Labyrinth einen ganzen Exkurs. Egal wie und auf welche Weise man sich Dürrenmatt zu nähern versucht, das Labyrinth bleibt ein konstanter Bestandteil seiner gesamten Schaffensphase und auch seines Lebens. In der Forschungsliteratur finden sich einige Untersuchungen des Labyrinthischen zu einzelnen Werken oder Werkreihen Dürrenmatts. Weiter werden andere Phänomene – wie beispielsweise das Absurde – in Kombination mit dem Labyrinth herausgearbeitet. Dürrenmatts Autobiographiewerk der Stoffe wurde in seiner Entstehung in Irr- und Umwegen behandelt. Auch in Gesprächen und Interviews mit ihm werden labyrinthische Aspekte und Vorstellungen in Dürrenmatts Leben und seinen Werken aufgegriffen. Eine Lücke besteht hier in der ganzheitlichen Untersuchung und Entwicklung des Labyrinthischen bei Dürrenmatt – unter Betrachtung von Werken, Gesprächen, Gedanken, Leben und seinen Schreibprozessen –, welche diese Arbeit nun füllen soll. Wo liegt der Ursprung von Dürrenmatts Faszination für das Labyrinth? Auf welche Art und Weise lässt er das Labyrinthische in seinen Werken zur Geltung kommen? Welches Verständnis und welche tiefere Bedeutung verbindet Dürrenmatt mit dem Labyrinth? Kann das Labyrinth sogar als Leitmotiv Dürrenmatts schriftstellerischen Schaffens bezeichnet werden? Diese Arbeit soll zeigen, wie Dürrenmatt das Labyrinth in seine Werke integriert hat, welche Funktionen es für ihn hat, welches Verständnis seinen Labyrinthbegriff prägt und wie sich sein eigenes erschriebenes Labyrinth immer weiterentwickelt hat, um so letztendlich zu einer neu orientierten, ganzheitlichen Lesart Dürrenmatts zu gelangen.
